LAS Art Foundation / Josèfa Ntjam
On occasion of the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia UNA / UNLESS designed the exhibition for the Collateral Event commissioned by LAS Art Foundation to present the work of artist Josèfa Ntjam. The exhibition unfolds in two sites: within the UNA / UNLESS purpose-built pavilion at the the Accademia di Belle Arti, and within the Satellite Space at the Palazzina Canonica of the Istituto di Scienze Marine CNR-ISMAR.
At the CNR-ISMAR Ntjam invites the audience to join her creative process of proliferating avatars of mythical and ancestral figures. Using a bespoke AI interface, visitors can create fictional plankton creatures from a dataset developed in collaboration with scientists at the ISMAR and Cardiff University.
To enhance the aesthetics of a scientific laboratory, UNA / UNLESS articulated the exhibition by introducing in the historic Palazzo metal, rather clinical, planes and volumes. Built by assembling a single construction element - the drywall metal structural profile - in fashions that allow for their disassembly and reuse once the exhibition closes to the public, the planes act as support for large-scale LED walls. Their support system interlocks with the stone ornate pillars of the Palazzo, while the planes are positioned to establish subtle plays of light through their standardized perforations. In the center of the room, profiles are stacked and strapped together to create an extensive seating area, rendered more comfortable by the inclusion of recycled foam that establishes a dialogue with the terrazzo floor.
