Kunsthalle Bielefeld Cultural Masterplan

Bielefeld, 2017

The masterplan project for the Kunsthalle Bielefeld consists in the feasibility study for the expansion of the modern and contemporary art museum designed by Philip Johnson in 1968 in Bielefeld, Germany.

The project takes as a point of departure both the history of the iconic building and its noteworthy collection as well as rising to the challenge of rethinking the role of a contemporary museum to date and specifically its contribution to the cultural landscape of North Rhine Westphalia and Germany. To this end the project, on the one hand is a in depth study of the museum and its evolution as well as a proposal which aims to project the institution into the 21st century and its applied arts. The design as such focuses on the optimization and redistribution of the existing programmatic distribution to accommodate for a more dynamic curatorial strategy of both the museum’s collection as well as its rich programme of exhibitions and events. With the expansion of the art landscape to include larger scale works and diverse media, the project moreover seeks to rethink the original spaces to accommodate for the exhibiting of these new and diverse contemporary art forms.
