Barbati Gallery

Venice, 2022

The project conducted by FWR at Palazzo Lezze-Michiel aims at restoring the architectural dignity of the 15th century Palazzo and transform this into an exhibition space, which to date hosts the Barbati Gallery.

The project focuses on bringing back to light the unique original architectural artefact following numerous alterations undertaken over the decades to obtain the offices of a shipping company. To this end, the design takes as a point of departure the history of the Palazzo which dates back to the first half of the 15th century and it’s two most significant features which include: the reduced height of its ground floor, a clear sign that the house did not have a mercantile function, and the fact that instead of overlooking a canal it overlooks a "campo", a large unbuilt area which only in those decades began to take on a significant urban role in Venice. Discoveries such as singular fifteenth-century decorated beams, and the late eighteenth-century decorations of a ceiling characterise the newly re-distributed rooms.
