Resolutions for the Antarctic

International Stations and the Antarctic DataSpace

Together with the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto, UNLESS presents “Resolutions for the Antarctic – International Stations & the Antarctic Data Space.” Building upon 2021’s “Antarctic Resolution,” a transnational research project launched in the form of an encyclopedic publication, the work presented at Daniels reveals the agency’s commitment to promoting a process of data democratization that ensures our southernmost global commons – Antarctica – is safeguarded for future generations. To this end the exhibition is articulated in three main sections which include: the “Archive of Antarctic Architectures”, the “Antarctic Resolution Open Access” and the critical documentary “Resolutions for the Antarctic – International Stations and The Antarctic Data Space”. Aiming to foster greater international scientific collaboration in and on the Antarctic, the proposed resolutions on display at Daniels are seen as essential to subvert our trajectory on the “highway to climate hell” that was alarmingly presented by the Secretary General at the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Now more than ever, explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s statement resonates as imperative: “We travelled to Antarctica for Science, in order that the world may have a little more knowledge, that it may build on what it knows instead of on what it thinks.” This exhibition is a call to action to build on what we know, and to optimize the collective production of scientific knowledge to inform undeferrable environmental policies that might secure our survival on Spaceship Earth.
