Art Models for the Earth System symposium

Guggenheim Bilbao Museum

UNLESS participated to “Art Models for the Earth System”, a symposium organized by the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum to explore synergies between art and scientific research. Specifically, the symposium aimed at establishing new relationships among experts from multiple fields for a better understanding of the dynamics of our planet, seeking innovative remedies to the climate crisis.Considering the complexity of the present situation and the impossibility of approaching it through a single discipline, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum brought together creative agents—artists, architects, designers, and curators—and leading researchers in fields related to the Earth System to present their current work and provide ideas on possible collaborations that could have a positive impact on our planet.UNLESS founder Giulia Foscari was invited to discuss the award-winning encyclopedic publication Antarctic Resolution. Alongside the research project, the conversation challenged the role of the EU - within the framework of the Green Deal - in reshaping the governance of our Global Commons, suggesting the possibility of reinforcing its position within Antarctica by transforming the existing, structurally sound, stations into European Antarctic stations, and position new infrastructures prioritising scientific urgencies over geopolitical interests. The role of the European Union in reshaping the governance of our Global Commons could be even greater, if alongside promoting European Stations, the EU could mobilise a transnational constituency and pioneer a much-needed Antarctic data-sharing policy.
